Closely following, but a completely-different thing is the year I spent as Secretary of my Elks Lodge. The major variation is...this was my project at my home on my time and with a deadline.

Am I happy I did it. You bet. Did I enjoy it all the way through? Probably not. Parts....when the frustrations of time constraint, parts not fitting just so, etc were involved, I was a bit stressed.

How about the reaction of my little grandchild? Not exactly what I expected, but then I had fairly open ideas of how she would react. It seemed from the start that she was mystified by the whole thing. The furniture she was unwrapping as her other Grandpa, her Dad & I carried the dollhouse in from the rear of my Suzuki jeep-type vehicle...occupied her quite nicely. In fact to the point she didn't realize the house was hers for many long seconds. THEN she was up and about the thing from all sides.

It took her only moments before the furniture/house connection solidified and she began moving furniture into the house. Over the next few hours the grandmas both helped re-sort and move the furniture.

I now sit and wonder what will become of the thing. I have high hopes, of course, of it becoming a young girl's cherished thing. That will probably occur as she ages and realizes what it is in terms of the commitment and time. Then the plaque will also probably mean more, and I am hopeful it makes it down the halls of time to great-grands, and a lot further. The whims of time; the lack of knowledge of what the future brings makes this a question.

I'll not be here. Doubtful I'll see her wedding day, let alone the birth of grandkids. But then I may be just maudlin...having my own version of postpartum as the house is gone and my two bedrooms return to normal use.

I'm glad I did it. I may never do another, but then.....I know I would do a better job this time, and I'd certainly know a lot more about the process and some possible variations...including nice furniture kits of really finished furniture....

Hummmmm Who knows!

Duke

Princess Gets Her Dollhouse!

Pictures in this post....videos to follow when I get a faster connection!

The dollhouse as it looked when delivered to Princess Lauren....<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_zzzjoDg3M4Y/Szd8B2n0h7I/AAAAAAAAB1E/l1eNgqAAnj8/s400/Front+of+House.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5419937047847929778" />
Lauren showing off her upholstered couch, courtesy of friend Lesley. Monday we celebrate, a day early, the birthday of Daughter Teri and then Tuesday morn bright and early Roadhouse towing SiderRoad Suzie will begin the trek home. However today I have already burned two fingers and one thumb when hot glue hit them as I either fumbled on the way from glue gun to roof, or the shingle buckled in the middle which leaves you with hot liquid plastic on both finger and thumb. OUCH! It is quite apparent my huge "meat hooks" are not too balanced for such small things as shingles with hot glue attached.<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_zzzjoDg3M4Y/SyErHHrKidI/AAAAAAAAByk/0DemWgiKpsc/s400/Shingle+Layout.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5413655628395219410" />
However, with perseverance, and at-this-point a beer, one achieves the goal of a completed roof section. I managed to cover all the remaining roof except half the main roof where the large tower is located. That is for tomorrow. Here is a partial picture of the old guy himself setting the individual roof shingles with a hot glue gun.

Only burned about five of my ten fingers and thumbs so far when shingles, freshly-glued flipped in my hand. Nothing like a little melted plastic to get your attention. Then pulling plastic off burned skin is a secondary joy!

Ah well, it is worth it. Of course, just three days ago I ordered 2 more bags of shingles which will now, it turns out, be unneeded. The plans called for 8 bags. I thought that a bit much, and ordered 3 then 2 more. I probably spaced my shingle rows more widely than some would.

Here is a view of the various roofs, except the undone side. Even managed to finish the tower top roof for the kitchen tower.

It now seems I may actually get the house done by my planned date of Sunday. However...That being said I still have the three-section porch roof to install and shingle. It goes around two sides of the house, and has a large gable decoration which I have already completed as a sub-assembly. The porch has a LOT of railings and posts also. Then I still have to build and install the doors (two sets of double doors for front and dining room), and also assemble the ladder which allows attic access, and actually is supposed to be set to fold up into the attic for storage.

The not-likely-to-get-completely-done is the remaining furniture. I plan to do what I can next week, however gassing, loading and setting up the motor home for the trip will take a lot of time and our daughter has a surgery next Thursday, the day before we leave. Mom will be there with her. I will take the furniture with me as I have 5 days in Texas to build in the motor home.

Spent a lot of hours on the house today and now going for a great Glenlivet on-the-rocks so I can relax!

Chim-Chiminey, Chim-Chim-Cheroo!

The chimney...a 16-piece construction is added. The crawling of window frame preparation, and the time-consuming items such as the week i spent on the 1st to 2nd floor 3-section stairway are behind me. Still lots and lots to do, but now things are moving and I feel more confident of finishing. Here is the inside look at the 3rd floor (attic) tower room. The room now has a tower top which will stay removable for access by "Princess" to whatever furniture she places there. The floors are in in the tower part of the 3rd floor.<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_zzzjoDg3M4Y/Swx563o0pwI/AAAAAAAABvc/ojCtqng1U-k/s400/Tower+room+w+floor.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5407831304839669506" />
This is a view of the 2nd floor master bedroom tower area to show the view from inside.<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_zzzjoDg3M4Y/Swx56jG5JdI/AAAAAAAABvU/CAhFLD48Ezs/s400/2nd+floor+tower+inside.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5407831299328648658" />
Here is the tower top with the 1st side shingled. Tomorrow I tackle the dining room doors and its extended entry onto the porch. This will be followed by beginning the roof install which is 5 steps in the construction. It is a complicated roof with lots of gables, etc.

Saturday will be a busy day as Duchess and a friend of ours will be addressing both some paint touch-up on the house and making cushions for the chairs of the dining room and library plus the living room couch, and a bedspread for the master bedroom.

I also did the grandfather clock today....well, I finished it. Printed the clock face with roman numerals, plus the pendulum and chains for the lower window. Looks good to me.

Hope you all have a quite nice Thanksgiving! We are cooking here for one daughter and her fiancee plus grandson, my brother and the parents of daughter's fiancee. Cajun turkey!

More later folks!

Duke

Tower Time!

Next step.....3rd floor attic is in, and now the tower which is three stories with a quite large room in the attic. This post is again sort of in reverse for purposes of allowing my viewers to see how things come together. This is the current dollhouse (not really as I have added the last wall (kitchen wall) today already and am flooring again.<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_zzzjoDg3M4Y/SwRV8d-aHFI/AAAAAAAABus/KZxi7JV_tjo/s400/3rd+floor+in.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5405539950078336082" />
This is a picture of the front corner of the house. When adding floors, one begins at this corner...working the walls and floors together until it all fits. The process can take quite some time. This shows both the glue in the corners, and the small "Princess" picture I placed in two-sided form in the upper oval window. It is actually last Christmas' picture of my Princess in her red velvet dress...at age 5. I am, as I have mentioned, trying to personalize this house to her.<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_zzzjoDg3M4Y/SwRV7zYY9mI/AAAAAAAABuk/91r7HaHp8aQ/s400/3rd+floor+glue+n+Princess+pic.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5405539938644588130" />
When placing the floor I have learned that just setting the piece in place, not really attached, and then allowing it to "settle" by not doing more for an hour or two seems to work wonders. If it sits there the parts seem somehow to then fit better when I actually begin the glue process.<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_zzzjoDg3M4Y/SwRV7rz-rHI/AAAAAAAABuc/lIRcSCWRqY0/s400/3rd+floor+sat+in+place.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5405539936612822130" />
MESS....Yes, even at this point in construction the mess on the day bed in our small bedroom is considerable. Remember, I am now working in two spare bedrooms. The small one for actual construction and the corner bedroom (as we call it) for assembled parts and furniture.<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_zzzjoDg3M4Y/SwRV7UUjN1I/AAAAAAAABuU/MFKWggvpWwo/s400/Mess.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5405539930306983762" />
The project has literally taken on a life of its own. My life will pretty much be the dollhouse until mid-December when it will hopefully be completed.

While having the walls in place may seem a lot, let me list some of the jobs remaining....

Flooring on the rest of the 2nd and all of the 3rd floors.
The three-story tower section must be assembled and sealed.
The kitchen bay, just two stories, must be assembled and sealed.
Then the porch and its railings and trim, the roof and its trim, and a few hundred wood shingles to be manually installed one-at-a-time!

In addition, there is paint touch up where construction marred my original paint, or where slots in the walls now contain unpainted, or not-finished tabs which must be smoothed and painted to match.

Lots to do, but I now feel I have a pretty good chance of getting it done.

I may have to take the following month off, however!

Duke

2nd Floor/Stairway installed & More Flooring

Installing the 2nd floor in my dollhouse...which involves also matching and installing the massive stairway simultaneously...proved to be job any 8-armed wizard could handle easily. For we mortals, it proved a challenge. The job is done, though I have not yet applied the glue gun as I am making final adjustments. Here is the look, post install, with some flooring ready for the living room/front hall area.<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_zzzjoDg3M4Y/Sv7jN7PBXGI/AAAAAAAABtU/s38Qgh9YJgc/s400/View+of+walls+n+2nd+floor.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5404006431269674082" />
A closer look at the flooring being readied, plus the stairway in place. Now the actual size of this thing seems even more massive than I had anticipated. It is a good thing I measured the rear door on "Sideroad Suzie", our tow vehicle in which Princess Castle will ride from Tampa to Texas for Christmas. The thing would absolutely NOT fit in through the door of our motor home, "Road House"....<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_zzzjoDg3M4Y/Sv7jNsn-SAI/AAAAAAAABtM/hZtwqHWLAF4/s400/Stairs+n+flooring.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5404006427347798018" />
Fitting the "wood" (actually vinyl) flooring for the living room. The stuff can be cut with scissors and comes with some really, really heavy-duty glue on the back. When I pulled off the paper covering, the boards separated, and I ended up installing most of the floor board-by-board!<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_zzzjoDg3M4Y/Sv7jNUTfNCI/AAAAAAAABtE/XroZZOEgKng/s400/Flooring+work.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5404006420819424290" />
Here is the finished flooring. The large area was easy...the front hall more of a challenge.<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_zzzjoDg3M4Y/Sv7jNMgAB1I/AAAAAAAABs8/LjAnKLC6wCw/s400/Floor+installed.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5404006418724423506" />
Here is the front hall. Windows & Trim

Approaching my self-established deadline for having the walls on the house up by time for our beach vacation (one week from today!). The remaining work has to do with installing windows and trim, plus some wallpapering. These tasks need to be done prior to wall installation as the job becomes much more difficult once they are up. This picture is of the many pieces making up only the 6 windows of the three story tower section.
Once painted, and glued in place the exterior frames and sills look like this. I am continuing the castle motif using silver for the exterior frames, and gold for the crown pieces. These pieces are three of the five sides of the main tower. There is a secondary kitchen bay which is only two stories, and smaller than the main tower.
Now the interior pieces (done in white), the actual plastic windows and the tower walls are complete and ready for installation. There are different "Levels" of dollhouse building!

I have found an entire community of builders online. Some make this a complete obsession. The following pictures are from one of these. Stairway To Heaven? - Nope, just to the 2nd floor!

Believe it or not I spent a week on this stairway (NO, not working full time, but probably spending a couple to three hours daily in short bursts...each added piece has to dry prior to moving on)...Here it is pictured still without paint or banisters. There were more than 50 parts to the stairway. Most simple dollhouses have traditional stairs in a stair well. This one is a standalone, and will be located just inside the main front entrance. Note: the yellow you see is glue which has not entirely dried. It does not show when finished.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 275px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_zzzjoDg3M4Y/Ssi5WW8Hb5I/AAAAAAAABoQ/SlN6mUYJwK4/s400/Stair+atop+Foundation.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5388760747914784658" />
The fit of the pieces here was pretty good...however, the labeling on the schematics was less than adequate. I had to modify some parts.

That brings up the topic of tools. I happened to have most of what I needed, but still have one to buy. I am using frequently a Black and Decker "Mouse" sander on large wall sections which range from quite smooth to quite rough. I have a sharp model knife, an entire selection of paint brushes for various sized pieces, and both wood glue and instant glue (for those hard to hold together pieces) This stuff sets in 10 seconds, so you had better KNOW where the pieces fit together! I will be buying a glue gun today...so far not needed, but aligning walls and panels will involve some hot glue application. One final tool that indispensable...my Dremel high-speed tool with a variety of disks, tubes, etc. for sanding, cutting, smoothing and so forth. I used this to replace one piece that was missing. Cut the piece from a section of left-over stock from a parts sheet.

Duke

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://dukebuildsadollhouse.blogspot.com/2009/10/stairway-to-heaven-nope-just-to-2nd.html' title='3. I enjoyed it then, but until now the time to do so was not available.

Then there is the "who to build it for" stuff....That may prove more complicated than I at first thought.

I have a 6 year old blonde, blue-eyed little grandchild in Texas who is known as "Princess", and who has been telling her Mom she wants a castle.

I decided to plunge in and make a dollhouse for her for Christmas.

OY!

9 rooms, plus 6 rooms of furniture in kit form. Gooollllleeee!

Much more than I thought.

The pic above is the usual format for the "Pierce" made by Greenleaf, one of the premier makers of dollhouse kits.

I am "Castle-a-sizing" the thing to match Princess' love of pink, purple, silver, gold, etc.

We will see how that works out....and, I now intend to blog the building as I go.

Keep reading folks.

It may be interesting!

Duke

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://dukebuildsadollhouse.blogspot.com/2009/10/why-would-i-tackle-this.html' title='1.
